Ever had the type of day where you are so busy that you have to escape to the bathroom to get a break? Today I ate my turkey sandwich in the bathroom. First I carried this turkey sandwich around with me... sitting in its nice zip lock bag in the bottom of my lab coat... and finally by 4 pm I was so hungry that I just had to eat it. I was told that not all days are this busy though- and most of the time you do get to eat lunch sitting down.
Mondays in IM are ridiculously crazy. Patients must think, "If I don't get better by Monday I am going in to see someone". So the whole office was filled. Strep throat, infected leg ulcers, chest pain, mucous cysts, knee injections, gout, depression, work injuries... you name it I saw it. But amidst the rush of new patients I was truly enjoying myself. My new preceptor is wonderful, he has been a PA for over 20 years! He was definitely running the show, but seeing as this was my first day I enjoyed being able to watch him in action and take notes. No matter how behind he was he would enter the room and that patient would become the most important person, he was sit calmly and really listen to their problem. If they brought a list in he would make sure that every bullet point was addressed. He was efficient, but the time spent in the room was just the right amount of time and patients left smiling... because they had been listened to and treated well.
I have a great feeling about the weeks that lie ahead.
