Teacher! Teacher!! Teacher!!!

Omani children are ambitious, excellent students who truly want to learn. They come to class eager to soak up new information. My first week I was in awe of their class participation. They love LOVE LOVE to answer questions. They will answer before you even ASK a question. Half of the class perioud is spent predicting what question you are about to ask. I turn my back to the chalk board and all i hear is "teacher teacher teacher teacher!!". They want to answer the question forming in my head, and they are confident if I call on them they will be able to produce a suitable answer.

It is driving me INSANE!

I made a new rule about a week ago that is as follows:

"Raise hands quietly with out talking."

Translates: Raise hand quietly, wait 1 second, if not called on yell "teacher" as loud as possible. Repeat.

Sometimes in class I just have to laugh.... I look around at all of their serious faces, and stiffly raised arms reaching as high as they can go, waving violently in the air, listening to TEACHER on repeat. They just want to answer the gosh darn question, I mean come on! How can you get mad at that ambition?

A few days ago a goat got stuck in our middle courtyard and was quite scared. As a result he pooped all over the brick courtyard, and in 120 degree heat this quickly turned quite pungent and smelly. OH MY WORD does goat poop stink. At one point I can remember needing to sit down in fear of fainting and smacking my face on the tile. But that smell is just a way of life when you have 5 goats that chill outside of your trash bin all day long. My kids were totally unfazed by the wafts of baking poo that blew in our AC unit.

Just another day teaching in Oman....
