A friend of mine at the Yoga Retreat handed me this book the other day with the powerful statement that it had changed lives. It is called Way of the Peaceful Warrior. As I read, I began to see the parallels in the book to what we have been learning in our theory classes here. I will share a few of them with you.
“The world out there is a school. Life is the only real teacher. It offers many experiences and if experience alone brought wisdom and fulfillment then elderly people would all be happy, enlightened masters. But the lessons of experience are hidden and you need to uncover them. You are overflowing with preconceptions, full of useless knowledge. You hold many facts and opinions yet know little of yourself. Before you can learn you’ll have to first empty your tank. It is a matter of body wisdom. Everything you’ll ever need to know is within you; the secrets of the universe are imprinted on the cells of you body. You can only read from books and listen to experts and hope they are right.”
When have you ever delved inward too look at the wisdom in your very genes? We are taught to research in school, entire classes are devoted to this skill. We learn how to read books, how to search the internet, we learn how to search journals and literature. When do we learn how to look inward? How to gain access to the knowledge gained from our experiences from our successes and failures? Who teaches us to analyze why we feel the way we do towards certain people or events? Why do we get angry? Why does our blood pressure rise? What brings frustration? What if we all looked inside and tried to find the root of our emotional turmoil? If we did find the origin of our ignorance we would then know the origin of all ignorance. What a beautiful world it would be.
“It is better for you to take responsibility for your life as it is, instead of blaming others, or circumstances, for your predicament. As your eyes open, you’ll see that your state of health, happiness, and every circumstance of your life has been in large part, arranged by you- consciously or unconsciously.”
