Today I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet with a brilliant mentor, a brilliant physician, a man who stands for values I believe in.... and I took it. I drove to his hime, closed my door, took a deep breath and walked towards his open door. I sat, and we talked for an hour and a half. He talked, I listened... I talked... he listened.... time flew.
He told me about the different adventures in his life. He told me about the very moment when he began to question doctors, question what they taught, why there was only one answer for each problem. There are pivotal moments in our life when we snap to life, and hear someone, really hear what they are saying, and realize there is more than that one answer. We learn to question, learn to take each person each problem as a new problem with new solutions. There is no one right answer in medicine. The art is in listening, and forming the treatment to that persons life. Holistic medicine can be much more than alternative treatments, at the very heart it is about seeing the patient as a whole person with a life, soul, heart, mind that also needs to be taken into consideration. It is about respect. And, that can be practiced anywhere. ANYWHERE. even in a psych unit.
When there is an open door, walk through. Do not let fear lead you back to safety. Walk on through.
